JetBlue announced Monday it is further expanding its presence between the Empire State and California by launching daily non-stop service between Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The announcement was made at the airport in Buffalo by JetBlue President and CEO Robin Hayes and U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Delta Air Lines announced plans for joint public/private investment in LaGuardia airport. The project will unfold in two phases, and Delta Air Lines will fund the second half of the expansion. Delta is investing heavily in the infrastructure of the airport.
LaGuardia Airport has picked a contractor to manage the $4 billion planned renovation of its central terminal. The project will add a third story to the terminal and capacity to serve 17.5 million passengers annually. A Swedish firm, Skanska AB, is taking a lead role in the construction to help reinvent the airport.
The FAA anticipates flights being grounded through 7 pm EST at New York’s LaGuardia Airport due to the snow and ice conditions. This comes after a Delta flight skidded on the runway while landing. All passengers were safe aside from minor injuries. Newark and John F. Kennedy Airport are also experiencing the same weather delays.
For the third week in a row another storm hits the northeast causing flight delays and cancellations for travelers. States being effected by the storm are Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. The storm should end Tuesday with snow fall reaching another 12-16 inches. Most flights have been cancelled out of Boston Logan International Airport as the city of Boston has received over 40 inches of snow over a 7 day period.
Thousands of flights are being cancelled as airlines prepare for the storm that will hit northeastern airports over the next few days. More flights are expected to be cancelled as the storm continues to develop. All three of New York’s airports experienced half of their flights being cancelled and Boston Logan will be closing flight operations at 7:30 pm on Monday until the storm eases up.
N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a plan to provide rail service to LaGuardia Airport. The plan, estimated to cost $450 million, would link the airport to a transit hub with a 1.5-mile AirTrain route. Both Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport have rail service.
A storm system moving toward the Northeast caused hundreds of flight cancellations in New York and Philadelphia Monday and is expected to disrupt more flights Wednesday, during the peak of the Thanksgiving travel rush. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have removed rebooking fees for flights affected by the storm.
